    Gabrielle Sylvester, MHC Intern

    She/Her/Hers

Gabrielle is passionate about supporting communities of color through a strengths-based, collaborative approach that centers clients’ lived experiences and challenges dominant, deficit-based narratives. She views therapy not only as a space for healing, but also as an act of community care. Inspired by Audre Lorde’s words, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare”, Gabrielle believes therapy can be a transformative and liberatory process.

Gabrielle is a Jamaican–American from a predominantly Black and underserved community in New York, which led her to witness firsthand how structural inequities impact mental wellness. These experiences continue to shape her commitment to reducing racial and ethnic mental health disparities and destigmatizing therapy within marginalized communities. She is particularly interested in working with individuals navigating race-related stress and trauma, as well as identity development.

Gabrielle is currently completing her MA in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at NYU, where she also earned her BS in Applied Psychology. She is an intern at Wove Therapy and brings a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive lens to her work. Her integrative approach draws from psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and person-centered theories, tailored to meet each client where they are. Her experience includes supporting projects uplifting Black youth mental health at the Homeplace Research Collective, providing one-on-one emotional support to students at NYU, and conceptualizing community mental health initiatives. With additional background in DEI programming and advocacy, Gabrielle is committed to empowering marginalized individuals while creating affirming spaces where all clients feel seen, supported, and equipped to thrive.
